Gone Too Soon (GTS) was written for the late Dr Graeme Nelson (photo).
Graeme was a well-known GP in the Eden area and at Pambula Hospital. He had many friends in the medical, surfing and back-country skiing communities. Graeme was a good friend of mine and we had shared many ski trips over a fifteen year period both in Australia and overseas before his untimely death in a ski accident at Mt Feathertop in August 2011.
I wrote this song in the weeks following Graeme’s accident trying to come to terms with his loss. “Gone Too Soon” just summed it all up perfectly for me at the time.
I was introduced to the Shed through regular Shed guitarist Steve Faggotter in late 2015. Steve F has been a life-long friend of mine and musical compadre over the decades. Steve was also a very good friend of Graeme, and his lovely family. We jammed on GTS one Shed sesh and soon realised that others at the Shed also had connections with Graeme. Bassist Neil knew the Nelson family through his work as a school counsellor and harp player Mick through his work as a paramedic and also in the surf! I think this made the song more poignant for those from the Shed who contributed on the recording!
